Cathy Holley shows introductory students how to use powdered glass (vitreous enamel), a piece of copper, and a kiln to make a beautiful, one of a kind creation. Each student will be given a 2 x 2-inch copper square as a pallet for their design, using paper towel pieces to make a template that is unique to their vision.
You’ll prepare the copper, learn to spread the enamel with small sieves, and then apply different colors of enamel, fired one color at a time in the kiln. Everyone will complete one square by the end of class, ready to take home that day.
If you’ve previously taken the Intro to Glass Enameling class, you can book a private session with Cathy to explore new and different methods for creating enamel designs including: using stencils; sgraffito – removing powdered enamel to create your design; separation enamel – applying a special enamel that reacts in fun ways with layers; “Scratch Board” enameling; and silver foiling under translucent enamels.
Ages: Because we are using a kiln reaching 1,500 degrees, students must be 18 years or older at this time.
