First Stitches: Introduction to Sewing

Learn the basics of using and troubleshooting a sewing machine. This is a required class to take additional more advanced classes.

Children 13 – 17
Adults 18+
Suitable for Boy or Girl Scout Badge Programs

This class will cover the following concepts:
• Parts of the sewing machine and function
• Threading the machine and bobbin winding
• Basic machine care
• Sewing project troubleshooting
• Adapting to different fabric types
• Testing stitches on multiple fabric types
• Completing a simple project

Project options: (2) Hair scrunchies or (1) Lavender rice heat pack

All materials for projects are included in class cost:
• Fabric
• Thread
• Bobbins
• Tape measure
• Interfacing/batting
• Closures
• Various materials needed to complete the project

Materials required and not provided (student purchased):
• Sewing machine + machine’s manual (can be found online for free!)
• Pair of fabric scissors
• Pins or fabric clips

Please ensure that your machine has the following required components prior to class: thread spool cap, a zig-zag and/or straight stitch foot, charging cord with attached foot pedal.
